"Wake Me Up When September Ends"  Stitch Wake Me Up When 2020 Ends Shirt was written by frontman Billie Joe Armstrong about his father, who died from esophageal cancer in September 1982, when Armstrong was 10 years old. When he was ten, his father died of cancer (a loss he addresses for the first time on American Idiot‘s “Wake Me Up When September Ends”). My heart goes out to him. I had esophageal cancer, but thanks to chemo, radiation, modern surgical protocols, and one of the best surgeons in the country I survived. I am damn lucky. Thank you. I made it because they found it early when they scanned me for my back surgery. God works in mysterious ways.
